Logic becomes a circuit

At MIT, Shannon worked with Vannevar Bush’s differential analyzer. His master’s thesis brought Boolean algebra to relay and switching circuits, connecting symbolic reasoning with electrical design.

The delight is in the change of representation: a physical circuit can be reasoned about with algebra. That meeting of abstraction and machinery remained characteristic of his work.

1950s

Permission to play

Shannon’s inventions included Theseus, an electromechanical mouse that found its way through a maze, as well as juggling machinery and other playful devices. The imaginative engineer belongs alongside the theorist.

He returned to MIT as a professor and died in 2001. The papers offer one rabbit hole; the toys offer another way to encounter the questions that occupied him.
